Contemporary Celtic music for ensemble featuring celtic harp and voice

An outstanding album of contemporary music inspired by ancient music of the celtic peoples. Kim Robertson supplies most of the vocals for this album as well as the harp playing, and does a fine job at it. Although decidedly different from artists like Enya or Lorena McKennitt, this album is in that vein of contemporary celtic. Very strong instrumental playing from well-known talent like George Winston, Eric Segnitz and John Williams make the difference. Engaging and creatively orchestrated - there is one track scored for traditional folk instruments plus bass clarinet choir and junk metal percussion - the side musicians on this CD are playing everything from tabla, accordion, and bodhran to electric bass guitar and brass quintet. A terrific collection!

Harp Concerti, Salzedo piece in arrangements for string quartet and harp

A fine recording of audiences' favorite harp concerti and a solo by Carlos Salzedo in recently published arrangements for string quartet and harp. The soloist is Elizabeth Hainen, who is the Principal Harpist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. She gives all the pieces inspired and technically brilliant performances. The string quartet accompaniments are played by members of the Philadelphia Orchestra. The first three arrangements are by Bob Litterell. The Dittersdorf includes flute, Murray Boren's arrangement of the Tango includes bass, flute, clarinet, oboe and percussion.

Big album of music for harp and viola by English composers

Harpist Jude Mollenhauer and violist Doris Lederer present and outstanding album for an all too rare combination of instruments. Harp and viola are a wonderful pairing, but little has been written for this duo. Mollenhauer transcribed the piano parts for the seven pieces that were written for viola and piano, with very succesful results. Many of the pieces are based on English folk song and make for very enjoyable listening. If you have a flute/harp/viola trio, you may find some new repertoire here to fill out a program. A monumental amount of work went into the making of this CD, and the performances are top notch. A very worthwhile addition to any harpist's CD collection.

Judy Loman performs contemporary works for solo pedal harp

Former Toronto Symphony Principal harpist Judy Loman performs works written by major 20th Century composers. None of these are transcriptions, all the works were conceived for solo pedal harp If you have not heard Judy perform R. Murray Schafer's Crown of Ariadne, the price of the CD is worth it for this one work alone as it was writtten for Judy and she plays it like nobody else. Judy is especially skilled at bringing out inner voices and makes the music easy to follow and appreciate with her clear phrasing and communication of the form of each piece. Wonderful performances of some of the most beautiful contemporary music for solo pedal harp.
